Mobile Puppet Show

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from over two decades of Early Childhood Development (ECD) experience, it’s how to engage young minds with fun, interactive and informative lessons and activities, to teach memorable lessons about nature and the environment.

The Mobile Puppet Show takes the ECD lessons loved by many at the Two Oceans Aquarium, and brings them to your school, creche or ECD centre. Choose from six educational puppet show options, filled with lovable characters like Hatch the Turtle and Peter the Penguin, and available in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. Mobile Puppet Show lessons incorporate fun songs, games, story readings, and dedicated Puppet Stories books that are included in your booking.

Please note: Mobile Puppet Show visits are not available on Weekends or Public Holidays

    Our Puppet Stories

Six puppet stories options to suit your ECD centre’s theme are available – all options are available as take-home book, and Mobile Puppet Shows.

      I Love Turtles

Hatch the Turtle still has a lot to learn about the world. On his way to the ocean, he meets Tinks the Tortoise. Together they learn about the differences between turtles and tortoises, but danger lurks as Tinks is stalked by Edgar the Eagle. Also meet Bella the wise old mommy turtle as she saves Hatch from marine debris.

      Keep the Beach Clean

Sally the Seal mistakes a plastic bag for a squid and eats it. Meet Sally’s friends as they try to help her get the plastic bag out of her throat. The story not only has a happy ending, but also includes an important environmental message.

      I Live Smart

Beauty and her friend Geo love spending time in nature. Join them on an adventurous visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium. Meet interesting sea creatures like clownfish, sharks, penguins and seals while learning about living smartly (saving water & electricity, biodiversity and waste).

      My Wild Pets

In My Wild Pets, Beauty and Geo go on their latest adventure as they learn about the differences between pets and wild animals; about how to love, respect and care for all animals. We also learn about sea stars as we meet a sea star who journeys from the ocean to the Aquarium and in doing so becomes an ocean ambassador.

      Water Cycle Adventure

Water Cycle Adventure follows Geo and his new friend Thalie, as they set off to learn about water. With the help of friends like Sunny the Sun, Fluffy the Cloud and Uncle Mthi the Big Old Tree they learn to appreciate water and make a vital discovery – that the Water Cycle and the Life Cycle are the same!

      Wetlands, not Wastelands

In Wetlands, not Wastelands, children once again join characters Geo and Thalie to learn about the animals living in a South African wetland - Otis the Otter, Taahira the Toad and friends all have a message to share about life in the wetland. As always, story-loving Thalie shares a unique tale – of Plucky the Pelican who convinces Plastic Bag to stop being a bully and shows him ways to be more useful and friendly.

      About the ECD team

The Two Oceans Aquarium’s I&J Children’s Play Centre has been a dedicated ECD education space 1995. It has been a place of entertainment and ocean education for Aquarium members, visitors and school children alike. Many visitors know our puppets by name, and eagerly anticipate what craft they can do in the centre. Over the years, the team that works in the Play Centre has developed into a trained team of puppet show performers and Early Childhood Development (ECD) educators. In addition, themed puppet shows are on offer, each with a specific environmental message that teaches children about nature and our impact.

Head of ECD, Marguerite Venter, has turned these beloved puppet shows into books, which means that the story can be taken back home. ECD educators Jerome Stationway, Rafee’ah Ismail and Liziwe Mbana perform daily puppet shows to Aquarium visitors and school groups in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

The six fun and educational puppet shows can now be enjoyed by children in their school. We can link up with your theme at school, whether it is about wetlands or plastic pollution, our puppet shows are designed to educate young minds with the help of our specially designed, one-of-a-kind puppets. We have Thalie and Geo, who narrate our stories, featuring various animals, such as Sally the Seal, Balo the Clownfish and Tinks the Tortoise. The puppets take the children on a journey of discovery and often lead to excited and interactive interactions from the children.

We also incorporate song and games, which emphasise the themes of our puppet stories. Included in our visit is story time, as all of our puppet shows now have dedicated books, which are included in your booking. Teachers Aisha Martin, Wafiqah Slamong and Siphokazi Matolengwe bring our stories to life and can offer them in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
